Baby Reindeer is a sensational drama series that premiered on Netflix on April 11, 2024. It consists of 7 riveting episodes suitable for binge-watching. The series is based on real-life events: Comedian Richard Gadd’s encounter with a female stalker and the impact it has on both their lives. The show has widely received positive reviews. However, due to the serious nature of the content, it might not be suitable for everyone. Content on the series includes sexual violence, stalking, sexual grooming, and drug abuse.
Trans Actress Nava Mau’s Portrayal of Teri

I checked out Baby Reindeer and quickly found myself binge-watching through the entire 7 episodes. The series is well acted but Nava Mau, the transgender actress who portrays Teri (main character Donny’s trans girlfriend) stood out to me. Donny met Teri on a trans dating website and their relationship is shown to be loving and supportive. Teri is portrayed as a confident and intelligent woman. She works as a therapist and demonstrates an empathetic and understanding nature. Throughout the series, Teri serves as a voice of reason and stability for Donny as he deals with the escalating situation with his stalker.
Realistic Portrayal of a Trans Character
The producers of Baby Reindeer are to be commended for their realistic portrayal of a transgender character. Teri’s trans identity is a part of who she is, but it’s not the sole focus of her character. She is shown to be a well-rounded character who is intelligent and adds depth and emotional complexity to the storyline. The show explores the complexities of Teri and Donny’s relationship. While Teri is a source of strength for Donny, she also faces her own vulnerabilities as the situation intensifies.
My Impression of Nava Mau’s Character in Baby Reindeer
Teri’s character was obviously intended as a positive portrayal of transgender women. Here’s why I believe this to be so:
Realistic and Multifaceted: Teri isn’t defined solely by being transgender. She has a career, personality traits, and a relationship, all independent of her gender identity — just like all trans women!
Played by a Trans Actress: The casting of Nava Mau, a transgender actress, adds authenticity to the role. Nava Mau undeniably brings the character Teri to life in a realistic manner.
Focus on Relationship: The show focuses on the dynamic between Teri and Donny, showcasing a healthy and supportive romantic relationship even in the midst of the chaos that plagued Donny.
Strength and Vulnerability: Teri is portrayed as strong and capable, but also vulnerable in the face of danger. There is a powerful scene (no spoilers here) that every transgender woman can relate to.
My impression of the character Teri is quite positive, however, there are some critical takes to consider. The show could have taken the opportunity to delve deeper into the transgender experience and the reasons why Donny and Teri’s relationship never developed. Overall, Baby Reindeer avoids trans stereotypes and presents a complex and relatable individual.
